It is recommended to replace the toothbrush every 3 months or so because
1、 Bacterial growth
1. Residual oral bacteria
In daily use, toothbrushes come into contact with various bacteria, food residues, and saliva in the oral cavity. Even rinsing after brushing teeth cannot completely remove bacteria remaining on the toothbrush. Over time, these bacteria will multiply massively on the toothbrush.
For example, common oral bacteria such as Streptococcus mutans and Candida albicans can attach to the bristles of a toothbrush, and after 3 months, the number of bacteria may reach a high level. Using such a toothbrush to brush teeth may bring bacteria back into the mouth, affecting oral health.
2. Impact of environmental factors
Toothbrushes placed in damp environments such as bathrooms are conducive to bacterial growth. The water vapor, dust, and other substances in the bathroom can interact with the residual substances on the bristles of the toothbrush, providing favorable conditions for bacterial growth. Even if the toothbrush is placed on the toothbrush holder, it is difficult to avoid the growth of bacteria, and after 3 months, the hygiene condition of the toothbrush will significantly decrease.
2、 Brush bristle wear
1. Decreased cleaning effect
After 3 months of use, the bristles of the toothbrush will gradually wear and deform. The worn bristles cannot effectively penetrate into the gaps between teeth, gum edges, and other areas for cleaning. For example, normal bristles can effectively clean dirt on the surface of teeth and between teeth, but worn bristles may become bent and split, making it difficult to reach hidden areas between teeth, resulting in greatly reduced brushing effectiveness and inability to effectively remove plaque and food residue.
2. Increased risk of gum damage
Worn and deformed bristles may become rough, which can easily damage the gums when brushing. Healthy gums are an important guarantee for oral health. Rough bristles can stimulate the gums, causing bleeding, redness, and other problems. Long term use may also lead to more serious gum disease.
